Two PhD positions in mineral spectroscopy

The Institute of Mineralogy and Crystallography of the University of Vienna, Austria, invites applications for two three-year PhD positions (subject to the final approval of funds). The PhD positions are attached to the new Marie Curie Chair of Excellence for Mineral Spectroscopy, starting April 1, 2006.

Successful candidates will be employed as research assistants (i.e., PhD students). The gross salary is ? 22,926.40 per annum total.

Candidates are supposed to hold a diploma in mineralogy or material or geological sciences. They should be interested in the structural characterisation of minerals using modern micro-techniques (i.e., defect structures, internal textures, primary growth and secondary alteration patterns). Corresponding to the main objectives of the Marie Curie Chair, PhD students will be taught several spectroscopic techniques (infrared absorption, micro-Raman, optical absorption, and luminescence spectroscopy); they should be interested in the application of these Ч in combination with other Ч analytical techniques to various analytical problems from different disciplines in the Earth Sciences.

Even though a major portion of the research will address the understanding of radiation-damage phenomena, such as metamictisation or effects of external irradiation, one Ђopenї PhD topic outside this field will also be possible. Please contact the Chair Holder (nasdala@uni-mainz.de) for further details. For more general information see http://www.univie.ac.at/mineralogie/MINSPEC.

Please send CV and contact information of two references before January 31, 2006, via e-mail to mineralogie@univie.ac.at.

The University of Vienna is an equal opportunity / affirmative action employer. Women are especially encouraged to apply.
