Abstract - Summary (short description): | |
Calcite and marble replacement by gypsum is one of the most dangerous destructive processes for city monuments. Details of this process and mechanisms of transformation of SO2 to [SO4]2- on building surfaces have been investigated. Modelling experiment has shown that gypsum growth on calcite occurs if solutions contains [SO4]2- as well as [SO3]2- ions. The supposed scheme of the process is: 1) SO2+H2O = H2SO3; 2) 2CaCO3 + 2H2SO3 + O2 = 2CaSO4 + 2H2O + 2CO2. An additional factor influenced morphology of gypsum crystals can be chlorides or organic acids in solutions. |
