The determination of fundamental thermodynamic characteristics of minerals is one of important directions of modern experimental mineralogy. Thermochemical study of the most important constants of minerals, such as the enthalpy of formation, dehydration, dehydroxylation and other was performed at the department of Mineralogy of Geological Faculty of Moscow State University in the laboratory of experimental thermodynamics. In recent years, the thermodynamic properties of natural clay minerals: kaolinite, dioctahedral (montmorillonite, nontronite, volkonskoite) and trioctahedral (saponite) smectites, palygorskite and sepiolite and magnesia-iron chlorites were obtained. These thermodynamic data extends the application of thermodynamic analysis to the study of physicochemical conditions of formation of minerals and definition of optimal technological conditions for industrial processing of ores and synthesis of new materials.
