Abstract - Summary
(short description):
External and internal morphologies of graphite cuboids and hexagonal graphite flakes from diamondiferous metamorphic rocks (Kokchetav massif, Northern Kazakhstan) were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Spatial distributions of both graphite types are inhomogeneous. Euhedral graphite flakes (up to 3 mm in diameter) widespread in the matrix and occur as inclusions in refractory minerals. Graphite cuboids are generally smaller (up to 500 μm in size), but also occur as inclusions in refractory minerals coexisting side by side with single diamond crystals as well as in matrix. SEM study reveals that graphite cuboids can be roughly subdivided into two groups. Some graphite cuboids consist of rather large euhedral graphite flakes (10-20 μm) and characterized by spherulite textures, while other cuboids represent intergrowth of small cuboids with smooth surfaces. Lack of any preferred orientation of graphite (002) in respect of cuboid or octahedral sectors evidence that origin of graphite cuboids do not related to partial or complete graphitization of metamorphic diamonds.
