(short description):
Identification of copper sulfides from sulfide ores of different genesis was performed and the published data on their synthesis, stability, and crystallochemical characteristics were examined. Two series are distinguished: the chalcocite-digenite (Cu2S- Cu1.75S) series (Cu-rich sulfides) and the geerite-covellite (Cu1.6S- CuS) series (Cu-poor sulfides).
The confinement of Cu-rich sulfides to primary ores and Cu-poor sulfides to hypergene-altered ores is revealed.
At the same time stoichiometric chalcosite and minerals with the crystalline structure based on the sulfur cubic sublattice (diagenite, tetragonal Cu2S) are more common for high-temperature ore formation conditions. Non-stoichiometric copper sulfides with the structure based on hexagonal anion sublattice (djurleite, roxbyite, spioncopite, yarrowite) are typomorphic for exogenic low-temperature conditions. Such specialization of distribution of copper sulfides in nature may be caused by their different temperature and chemical resistance.
