Abstract - Summary
(short description):
The recently discovered Cave of Crystals in Naica (Chihuahua, Mexico) contains some of the biggest and more fascinating natural crystals ever found: transparent gypsum crystals up to 11 meters long. This natural wonder poses some very interesting questions related to preservation technicalities and, much more puzzling, on the conditions and mechanisms that could explain their origin. On the basis of geochemical evidences collected on-site and a set of crystal growth models we show that the conditions within the cave during the growth of crystals fall into a narrow range of temperature and chemical composition making possible a very stable self-feeding mechanism that worked over long time close to equilibrium giving rise to this singular site.
